For example, according to Buehler, people generally underestimate task-completion time by up to 40 per cent.

The news was not all bad though, as there are a number of ways you can improve your time-keeping ability. For example, Kruger research suggests that people give more accurate estimates of how long a task will take if they first break it into detailed steps.
